Where are Klek and Kamačnik situated?

  • Halfway between Zagreb and the Adriatic Sea, this wonderful region, often left out of tourist maps, hides amazing natural beauties. That's why we invite you to discover them with us!
  • Mount Klek and mountain Kamačnik are located in the Croatian mountain region of Gorski Kotar, which, due to its mountainous landscape, is often called "Croatian Switzerland".

Why visit Klek and Kamačnik?

  • Because Klek is the cradle of the Croatian alpinism and mountaineering. More precisely, in 1874, the Croatian Mountaineering Society was founded on its peak as the 9th Mountaineering society in the world.
  • Because at the very end of this exciting climb on top of Klek, you will have the opportunity to try your begginer mountaineering skills.
  • Because the Kamačnik river canyon is not like as from a fairy tale, it's the fairy tales that are inspired thanks to landscapes like this.
  • Because Klek and the Kamačnik canyon are places that will truly stimulate creativity and rest your soul.

What are Klek and Kamačnik hiding?

  • 850 hectares of protected landscape which will astonish every nature lover.
  • Unique sound installations like: Pan's gong, bear's marimba, deer's horn and pooh's bells that will entertain everyone from 7 to 107 years old.
  • One of the three deepest springs in Croatia, the source of the Kamačnik river is deeper than 118 m, which is the depth divers reached so far.

Trip itinerary (may vary depending on our walking pace and trail conditions)

Visit the magical Klek mountain where, according to the local legend, witches gathered in ancient times and guarded the sleeping giant after whom the mountain got its name. Apart from that, the first Croatian professional mountaineers gathered on Klek already in the 19th century, and Stipe Božić - the most famous Croatian alpinist - took one of his first alpinist steps here.

After leaving Zagreb in the morning, we reach the village of Bjelsko around 10 a.m. A hiking trail begins in the village that leads us to the peak, which is located at a height of 1,181 m. After a steep but very exciting climb to the very top of Klek with the help of cables and ropes*, we will enjoy the beautiful view, from where you can see Medvednica, Bjelolasica, the wooded Ogulin region, and on clear days the Julian Alps. We will take a short break in the mountain lodge**.

We continue by vehicle towards the Kamačnik canyon, where we will take a longer break for lunch and cool off from the hot summer days. After lunch we will enjoy in a wonderful walk in one of the most beautiful river canyons in Croatia. In addition to roughly 6 km long walk, we will definitely stop and play on the creative instruments inspired by the fauna that surrounds us. Who knows, maybe you will enchant a forest fairy or an elf with your playing and decide that you are better off in the forest than in an urban environment.

Return to Zagreb in the late afternoon.

  • * The ascent to the peak of Klek is somewhat steeper, but does not require any mountaineering experience.
  • ** The mountain lodge is only open on weekends.
